Modern Technology and its Impact on the Internet, Business and Human Behaviour

The Digital Era is Here! The way people communicate and do business is changing fast as result of advances in modern technologies.  Businesses that cannot keep up with technology advances, may soon find that they are sidelined and superseded by those geared for the digital era.  Fortunately for small to medium businesses, this may be to their advantage as modern enabling technologies are relatively cheap and smaller businesses may be able to serve niche markets better than larger corporations.  Public opinion is fast becoming the most important and driving factor to gain business customers, which will eventually render most traditional marketing methods almost negligible in comparison to public performance ratings and opinions.

Past Technology: During the previous era, landlines and radios enabled people to communicate over great distances before the Internet came along to connect computers.  Cell Phones, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Television (TV), Cameras and other technologies coexisted as separate technologies while Internet users were mostly unaware of other Internet users.  Those days are long gone as technologies merged and became available to the general public and incorporated in mobile or portable devices.

Present Technology: The previous barriers between Portable Computers, Cell Phones, GPS Devices, Cameras, Music Players, Portable TV’s and Radios are eroding fast as they are all incorporated in modern Smart Phones, destined to be widely available to the general public within a few years.  Furthermore payment systems, books and other facilities are also incorporated in these personal devices and it would not be far-fetched to think that Smart Devices may eventually serve to replace personal Identification Documents (IDs), Passports and other Pass Cards.  Augmented Reality is replacing Virtual Reality to superimpose virtual information on the real world through cameras or lenses in Smart Devices.  The Internet serves as infrastructure to connect all these technologies and devices through various access points and methods, thus changing the face and function of the Internet.
